Connecting laptop to internet by phone line...

What laptop do you have? Modern recent laptops have built in modem. You just need a lead to plug into the phone point. Lots of cheap dial up numbers available.
caveat...it's entirely possible they've stopped installing modems! A few years since I bought my laptop. I'll stand correcting if that's so.
its an Acer 7520, I bought it from Tesco Direct just over a year since, have found it listed on Amazon with the specs HEREWeight Loss - 102lb0 -

yeah, the standard models don't tend to have dialup modems installed.
Or, more accurately, they don't tend to have the connector soldered on, and tend to have a jumper/solder joint on the motherboard to tell it to ignore the fact it has one, since it's generally standard boards and chipsets.
And since a USB dialup modem costs the same or more or less as a usb ADSL modem...
