Why do some people put messages saying please contact me before bidding.

Maybe because they want to know the feedback rating of the bidder, location and check out whether the bidder is genuine.

It will obviously depend on what's being sold, and who by, but some sellers selling certain items, may want to know that you are a genuine buyer before letting you bid, or they may want to make sure that you are aware of something specific about the item, or their terms of sale.

Some scammers also ask for contact so that they can talk you into buying 'off ebay', or maybe explain that you are not buying what the auction states and are trying to get round ebay policies. Very common with pirate DVD sellers who would prefer people to walk away from bidding, rather than bid and leave neg feedback when they realise they have bought a pirate.

If they post an email address in large font and ask people to contact them at that addy, it's because they've hacked into the seller's account and the only way for them to get the money is to persuade people to send them the money directly.
