Virgin Broadband - Email

Hi

Can anyone help please, when entering e-mail via web sites my computer is set up to MSN and not Virgin who is my provider, so I have to log on and copy and paste into Virgin to send e-mails. I am sure I can set my machine up to automatically load virgin e-mail page - anyone know how to do it.

Thanks
Sandra

Ignore my first post, I thought you wanted to change your homepage to virgin webmail..

In outlook express, change the smtp server from smtp to mail.virgin.net, I think.

    .

Hi I have tried this and still cannot get it to work. I was on AOL before virgin and I am not used to this system. Is this right, I have to go into Web mail to get my e-mails? When receiving e-mail it receives via Outlook and Virgin Webmail?

However, when I want to say send this page as an attachment it goes into Outlook to send then I get the error message as before, although it is all set up correctly as you have shown me.

Hope I am making sense, I am no computer buf.

    Anyone help please

OK, normally the installation CD should setup outlook (or outlook express) automatically.

What you need to do is refer to the letter which came with your username and password for your internet, on that letter it should tell you how to setup your email manually. If it does not, then it should tell you the:

POP3 and SMTP server for Virgin. If you can not find this information, then you will have to get in contact with virgin and ask them for this information. Hopefully, they will talk you through setting up you're account step-by-step.

    The error message:

The host 'smtp' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'mail.virgin.net', Server: 'smtp', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

This is looking for the SMTP server 'smtp' where it should be something like:
mail.virgin.net or smtp.virgin.net - different ISP call there servers different things - but mail.whatever.net is normally the most common.

    Actually, it is mail.virgin.net

Follow the instructions on this page (which i managed to find)

    http://www.virgin.net/customers/helpme/email/outlookmac5/1.html

It shows you on a Mac and not a PC but the screens are similar.

    Total amount owed: £8,950.00

P.S. If that is your real name, are you sure you don't want to choose a nickname instead? If you post here a lot, you will end up revealing a lot of personal info to the world.

    and you may get spammed..

yes this is my real name, but I am not very good at this, dont know how to change it or put a nice little man on like yours  - any tips would be very grateful

If you have Outlook Express that is where you send and receive your emails, to check your settings: at the top of the page you will see Tools
    go to
    Tools/ accounts/mail
    under Servers it should be
    Incoming Mail pop.virgin.net
    Outgoing mail smtp.virgin.net

Connection: always connect to this account using:
I have Virgin broadband so mine is set to Speedtouch connection, if you are on payg then you select Virgin from the drop down list.

If you want to set up a new mail just follow the instructions and put your incoming and outgoing mail as above.

You only need to go into Virgin Webmail if you want to acces your mail from another computer.

  • Thank you all,

I have managed to get it so I can send emails as I wanted, the e-mail is received ok but after it is sent I get this message

I am confused, as the e-mails are been sent ok - any ideas
  • yes, I have checked, it is weird as it is saying underneath the error message that 1 of 2 actions have been sent.

Thank you for the link for the Avatar but the thread is closed. I have asked the administrator if they could change my name for me - which is the only way apparently.

outlook or outlook express? which version?

if you search the net (or this forum) for Avatar, there are instructions on how to set them up, and get one from the web.

Intel may be able to help you (Sorry Intel!)..
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
