When getting a ticket, do you physically get a ticket?

I'm just asking as I parked in our town centre car park one night a couple of weeks ago. Parking has been free for years at night, but the council introduced a charge of £1 in the evening. As I don't park in the evening normally (had just gone out for a meal), I'd completely forgotten to get a pay and display ticket. I came back to the car about an hour and a half later, and saw 2 parking attendants looking round a car and taking photographs. I went to my car but there was no ticket on it. So I think they may have only just started doing their rounds.

If I had got a ticket, would they put a paper one on my windscreen, or can they just send you one through the post? And how long does it normally take for them to send it to you. I'm hoping they hadn't got round to my car yet - and wil definitely remember in future!

Whenever it's happened to me, it's a big yellow sticky envelope on the windscreen...

I know if the Police issue a ticket they will put an actual ticket on your windscreen.

If when you return to your car there is no ticket e.g. it's been blown off or removed by someone who thinks it's all a big laugh and the ticket remains unpaid after 28 days you will get a Notice to Owner through the post (providing you are the registered keeper of the vehicle) and this will advise you that a ticket was issued and give you a further 28 days to pay.

Note that this does not apply if you were present at the vehicle when the ticket was issued.
