How the hell did this happen?

Comments

  • Did it turn up in your inbox or spam folder?

The spam server that sent it to you could simply be guessing emails addresses randomly at GMail. I have my own domain and create email addresses per site I sign up with. For example my email address here is:

    moneysavingexpert@fictitiousdomain.com

My email address at the bbc would be bbc@fictitiousdomain.com, google would be google@fictitiousdomain.com ect ect... This allows me to blacklist any email addresses that I get spammed from without effecting my other email addresses. Quite neat.

And yet I get spam from things like aaaa11111@fictitiousdomain.com, this is the spam servers trying to guess email addresses at my domain. Fortunately I dont get many, but you can bet all the spammers target GMail in this way!
