Bananas never get thrown out in our house. I buy them when they are on the green side. Hubby will eat them when they are black. xxx

With small ones you get a larger number of portions* for the same price. That must be a lot more significant than flesh to peel ratio.

    * If you're eating them whole by themselves, of course. If you're serving them in a salad etc then this advantage is less significant.

While 6 small bananas might be used to give 6 people a "portion", they might only weigh as much as 3 mediums ones and therefore the portion size (as per the NHS five-a-day guidlines) could be only half of what people expect so this should be borne in mind when opting for smaller fruit to stretch the budget. ie the six people get half a daily portion each not one.

I remember from school biology that smaller animals had a larger surface area proportionate to volume and lost heat quicker. The same principle applies here. Smaller fruits will have a larger surface area (skin=waste) to the volume of the fruit proportionately and therefore are less economical.

I have also noticed that the value/basics bananas are priced in packs of 5 or 7 rather than by weight. It is obviously more economical to get the heaviest pack/biggest fruit size in this case.

    It's only a game
