Are you trying to burn them so you can watch them on a standard DVD player?
If you're using Nero (I think) you'll need to convert them to a format that it can burn that can be read by DVD players i.e. VOBs or MPEG files.
Nero won't let you burn an avi as a video DVD.0 -
Try using "ConvertXtoDVD"0

ConvertXtoDVD is a free download by the way0

Yeh, you need to convert the file to 'DVD' format. You can download software to do this from Cnet. Just type in 'AVI to DVD converter' and lots of software will come up- some will be free! but be warned some will leave a watermark in the screen. If you have Vista Home Premium or above, you can just go Start - All Programs - and there will be a DVD Maker thing there (sorry, can't remember exact name)The quickest way to become a millionaire is start off as a billionaire and go into the airline business.

.......but it puts a watermark in the middle of the picture unless you buy the full version for £35.0

For the amount of times I've used ConvertXToDVD, I'd very happily put £35 towards it.
As it so happens, I've not yet needed to...

Def agree with convertxtodvd, its brill, really easy to use (and free) but takes about an hour an half to covert., which same goes for all other software ive used before. Im thinking of just buying a dvd player which plays avi files, that way, so im told (!!) goes straight onto dvd disk in about 5 mins, done, and plays on the dvd player : )0

If you are considering spending £35 then IMO it would be better spent on a divx player (there's one in the Argos book for ~ £25) then you won't need to convert anything and you'll be able to stack up to half a dozen movies on one DVD as plain data files.0

Apart from if the downloaded files aren't in xvid+mp3/ac3, or if they use qpel/gmc/a custom quantization matrix. Lots of standalones will struggle with anything but the most basic settings.
And why buy yet another thing to put under the TV? Converting from xvid to dvd (while far from ideal, quality-wise) can be done for free, giving results every bit as good as a paid-for app. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0
