Possible to change tax code between two jobs?

I was just wondering if anyone could help me....

I'm currently working in one job and have just reduced my hours to 6 p/w. Obviously as this has been my only job all this time the tax code is 603L.

I'm about to start a new job next Monday which is 35 hours p/w. This will obviously be my main job now and the other one will become my 2nd job and abit on the side. However as I haven't given them a P60 since I won't have one, the tax code will be "BR."

Is it possible to have the tax codes changed around so that the job I'm in full time now is 603L and the job where I am working 6 hours is BR instead of having it the other way around? And if so, what do I have to do?

Any help/advice would be much appreciated. :D

  • It is possible though I'm not sure how you do it!

    I think the best course of action is to speak to the tax office that deals with what be your part-time role and ask their advice on how to proceed.

    yes phone your tax office and they will put your tax code to your main job. you will have to pay tax i am afraid as your 35 hour job will take you over your tax code, they may put some tax code to cover all your 6hrs for the year and the remainder to your main job , the tax codes were increased in april 6th, but at least you wont be paying tax at br

    You need to speak to the tax office. You can either change over backdated to the start of the financial year - in which case one job will refund all the tax paid and the other start taking it - or do a month one changeover which means it starts immediately but is not backdated. In your case these are much the same as it's only April!

    Your new employer should give you a P46 because you won't have a P45 for them. If they don't, you can download one from HMRC website. I can't remember what the questions are any more (they've changed) but if it's not clear that the new job is your 'main' job then put a covering letter in.

    At the same time, you might want to give your current employer a letter saying this is no longer your main job. Or ask them which is your tax office, and phone them.

    Thanks guy. Basically I'm working for the same local government but just in two different departments. The people in my payroll and HR are real dimwits so I'm not sure how I will even approach them.

    Also for my new job they didn't even ask for my bank details (this is even before they knew I was an internal employee!) forget even talking about P46s.... I'm quite annoyed with it cos I don't think she's even processed my payment details at all. I guess I'll sort that out when I start next Monday...

    The 645L tax code is for a main job right? And the BR is for any other additional/part time jobs?

    No point in asking your employer to change your code numbers over as they can only take instructions from HMRC. You need to ring your tax office and tell them which is now your main job so they can issue the codes relating to the correct payroll numbers. 647L includes all yoour allowances, BR is basic rate.

    Youe P46 will sort this out for you. Get one and fill it in as soon as you start your new job, you will be on BR until HMRC return a tax code notification to your new employer. Your 2nd job will be BR and your new job will be the code HMRC asign to you.

    I had a similar situation a while back and was paying a lot of emergency rated tax that I had to claim back. I finally got someone in the tax office to lok at my record and she advised me to just split my allowances between jobs . Voila! all done with no extra tax to pay and claim back.
    Maybe worth a call to your tax office?

    splitting the tax codes only works if both jobs will pay less than the personal tax allowance in total
    smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;) :cool:
