How to Stop Page Hijacking?

Hi all,

Have installed all the free anti-virus software offerings but my browser is still being redirected to 'smileycentral' without my permission, which is getting v. irritating.

I don't have smileycentral installed on my machine (at least not that I'm aware of) it's a brand new machine also and i have a firewall etc.

Any ides how i can get rid of this bleedin' browser hijack? :(

many thanks in advance

    Hello fraz

I downloaded smiley central so you've got some idea how dim I am when it comes to pc's :o

But what I didn't realise was I'd downloaded a toolbar (?) called My Way. I went to the My Way site to see what it was all about and noticed in their own forum a lot of posts complaining about the myway and smiley central thing and spyware.

Not sure if you google under 'My Way' it might help. I can't seem to find the forum I mentioned anymore ???

  • You need AdAware or Spybot-Search & Destroy. In fact, they are free so you may as well have both. Links to these and many other security freebies are in this thread.

Also, seriously consider not using Internet Explorer. A lot of people have been converted to Mozilla Firefox lately as it's much less susceptible to these hijacks.

I had that bloody myway tool bar- used Giant to get rid of it as nothing else would.

Giant anti-spyware now bought out by Microsoft- would suggest trying the new free thing. https://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
:idea:I got an idea, an idea so smart my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about:idea:

You can also download a very good freebie called Hijackthis.exe

This program will list all of the plugins for your browsers. It will also get rid of them for you. Word of warning though. It is a very powerful little program, and your results will come up with all the bits running on your browsers for all the programs you use, as well as the spyware you don't need. Deleting the wrong thing could cause programs you use not to work. If you're not sure of what to delete, there are forums that you can post your results and people will tell you do and don't need.

You can get the program and a tutorial to use it (including how to post your results to a forum) here
