There were loads parallel imports around that time, due to the huge price differences between Europe and the UK.

Alternatively it may have come from a car supermarket as a Cypriot import :)

It may to your insurance company  My Celica is a Euro import and is loaded on the insurance even though they were ever only made at one factory in Japan - trying to argue this point with the muppets is as much fun as banging your head with a hammer. The other thing to check is does it have an alarm fitted as standard as Euro Celicas do not, only the immobaliser.

Japanese imports - particularly toyotas are renowned for having slightly different body panels, lights, trim, engines, etc. Thus the reluctance from insurance companies.

Shame really - as they are usually far better cars. Less rust in particular. There are insurance companies that are not prejudiced against imports. Recommend trying Toyota owners forum etc.
