Insurance question

Hello,

I backed into a pole (crappy day), how does one typically go about submitting such a claim for insurance? Do you pay them your deductable and then they pay the shop? Is it usually worth getting them involved, or cheaper for you to pay?

It depends on the damage, how bad is it?

What level of insurance cover do you have?

Firsly i would get an estimate and see what the difference is between that and your excess. If its more than the excess and you don't want to pay the extra i'd go through your insurance company. Just give them a call and they can set the claim up pretty easily.

I deal with motor claims day in day out! Hope i helped :)

If your getting quotes to weigh up whether to pay for it yourself or go through the Insurance, explain this to the garage as they will have one price if you pay (Which is normally cheaper) and one price if it goes through the insurance.

Bit of an urban legend this. The difference is more to do with the standard of the repair work rather than anything else.

I agree, if you go through the Insurance the garage will have to use new parts to replace (There are some exceptions as some Insurers use recycled parts for cosmetic repairs and some Insurers will use pattern parts). If you are paying for the repairs yourself a local garage will often give you the option of reusing the same parts, recycled parts or pattern parts which can make their price cheaper. In addition some knock a small amount eg between 5% and 10% off if you are paying immediately as it can take some time for some insurers to pay them.

So this would mean the price can be cheaper if you pay for it yourself, as you said sometimes the standard can be lower than an Insurance job but in some cases the customer is happy for this. In some cases it would be the same standard as the Insurer would use recycled or pattern parts anyway
