    umm...whats a mini PCI slot?

    update.....
got it back from the local pc shop today, after copying my HDD (5 DVDS worth of junk, oops)
opened the back up a bit...and what i tihnk are the RAM look to be seated properly.
took out the BIOS battery, put it back in, found a reset button (paper-clip required thing....that i didnt realise i had, oops)....pressed 'on' switch and....it started working-ish. Screen came up saying summat like 'eek the bios stuff is all weird, press F1 or Delete'...but I tried pressing both, but each tim nothing happened.
Took bios battery out again, paper-clipped the reset thing again, 'on' button again...but this time nothing happened at all....grrrr!

have had bios battery out for 2 hours now whilst at lectures, just going to see what happens........and the answer is....absolute f*** all

will investigate further with screwdrivers in a moment...but can anyone shed any light on why taking the bios battery and pressing reset partially worked the first time, but no subsequent times?

    Thanks
    Hol x

Removing Bios battery will reset the date and the typr of disk you have. No need to take it back out.....
Please no more screw drivers !!!

Now you know it is alive go thru the combinations of turning it on batt/mains etc. No power first, second pop battery in and leave it to charge off the mains - give it 20 mins or until the battery light shows it is charged

the reset button ( sorry should have said to look for a small hole paperclip size, should only be pressed when the laptop is in a confused state - as it was. No need to remove the BIOS battery again.

When you get it booting read the screen it will tell u what ONE SINGLUAR (unless its has a "+" plus between the keys) key to press to get to the BIOS setting maybe Del or F2 or Ctlr+S etc ... some where on the screen it will tell you what keys to use to navigate the BIOS and how to save changes

Reset the date, look for the disks and set these to auto if possible - the memory should be spotted and the processor. then exit and save changes should reboot ........ good luck

the one time it showed that screen it said press F2 (for one thing) and Del (for another)...and i can't remmeber what the options were now...I think it was one for Boot and one for Bios

...and the screwdriver has gone away now, so stop panicking :)

    Thanks

It is life Holstar, but not as we know it .......

We know it has not shuttled off its mortal coil to that big recycling plant in the sky - aka it is worth trying some more.....

So put the battery back, put the power lead in, let it charge for 10 mins, hit the on button, hit the reset button with your paper clip - you should be able to feel it click, try on button ... till you get to read screen - hit the key for bios - if you miss the screen - do the three finger salute ( Ctlr + Alt + Del ) to get it to reboot do not power off - keep C+A+D'ing till you get in.
    Good luck

once you take the battery and power out, the reset button does nothing..

try reseating the ram, and take everything out you haven't tried already, then switch it on.

if it came on once, it is a good sign..

if you have nothing on screen, a screwdriver is required.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
