It is possible from within software. A virus could acess the bios and change settings. A bit pointless though, since if you've got a virus that can do that, and didn't notice, the virus could just do it when you're using the PC, and you wouldn't notice. No need to confuse or arouse suspicion by turning itself on when you're not using it.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

Thanks guys, you have given me a few options to investigate now.
Robt, I am wanting it to power up from a complete shut down. I am pretty certain I know how to do it from standby but that is not what I am after.

Looking at the spec for the Motherborad you quote, it supports ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) and has some Power Management features. Normally the manual provides details of these, but the manual doesn't, so you would have to go into the option in the BIOS setup and see if there is anything there. If there is, its normally quite clear, and just allows you to set the time that you want it to wake up. HOWEVER, any of the poweron features like this, or WakeonLan, will ONLY work if you use the poweroff (Shut Down) function in windows (which is not standby or hibernate). If you turn off using the Power button, they will NOT work.

I always shutdown from within Windows and never use the power off button. Hopefully this means there might be a solution for me.
