Security for Vista

My new Dell is being delivered this week and wonder on a decent security programme for it, currently using AVG Free 8.5 and also Ad-Aware for pop ups, using these on Windows XP, is it worth loading them onto my new laptop with Vista on? Been using them both on XP and had no problems and no bugs, touch wood

If not, what can you recommend?

Thanks in advance

  • AVG is quite good if you dont want to spend money. Otherwise I'd try Kaspersky. Its about £15, but is very easy to use and has the highest detection rate. Vista comes with Defender which does the same job as Adware, but its worth keeping Adaware and scanning with that from time to time. Infact you may also want to install Spybot Search and Destroy too. Not all Adware programs find all adware, so scanning with each in turn increases your chances of finding the nasties.... if you have the patience to do that of course.

Another good tip if not to use Internet Explorer. Try Chrome, Firefox or Safari instead. IE is slow and riddled with holes so not using it will decrease your chances of picking up infections while surfind the net.

One the best defences you can have is a hardware firewall. If you have one built into your home hub or wireless network hub, then ensure its switched on. This will greatly increase your security as it isolates you from the internet, and only allows stuff onto your computer that you requested.

Use Avast for the Anti Virus, the Firewall on your router and don't disable UAC. Vista + UAC + IE = the most secure internet experience.

NB: Kaspersky is currently free for a year if you use Barclays Online Banking.
I would not rely on AVG Free edn, it is nothing like as good as it was a year or so back. If you want a free AV I would go for Avira.
If you are using the new Dell wirelessly, make sure you are using WPA encryption not WEP. If your router does not support WPA then you should upgrade.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
