Help with picking a long weekend in Europe.

Through my work, I have been fortunate enough to win a long weekend of my choice to a destination in Europe. We have never been to Italy and therefore this is top of our wish list, however, I would like to pool all of your thoughts together re :

1.Italy : Particular areas

2.Europe : Are we missing a trick by maybe not going to a more unusal place which you may not normally book?

Thank you for any help you can offer

I will always suggest Warsaw, it is an amazing city. Lots of history and also becoming very moden. It is amazing to see the old square totaly rebuilt after WW2 (and most of the rest of the city)

    My Warsaw pics

There are a few pictures I have taken of Warsaw. It really is worth a visit.

Ok, my two favourite places in Italy for a long weekend:

    Florence - divine. Simply fantastic.

Rome - so much to do, so little time. You need to spend at least 3 nights here.

Genoa - lovely place for a two night break. Gorgeous food and Portofino down the road.

    Other places in Europe:
    Copenhagen
    Dublin
    Biarritz
    Vienna

I really, really want to go to Carcassonne in France. Looks lovely, and I've heard so many good reports.

    How about Tallinn(Estonia) or Krakow(Poland).

You've got to go to Venice before it sinks! It's great at night when all the daytrippers have gone. You feel as if you're walking around inside a Renaissance painting. No cars, just boats. Verona (where Romeo met Juliet!) is only dwn the road. So very romantic.

    Rome is also AMAZING!
    It's great to be ALIVE!

Italy - Have to agree Florence is my favourite by far! Have been to Venice, Rome, Verona, and Florence beats them all hands down imo!! Now I'm thinking about it I can't really put in words why I think its so great but am sure someone else will expand a bit on it!

Re Tallin (estonia), I have never been but oh went with a group of mates and said it really was full of loads of stag nights being pretty noisy/a bit of violence!! He said he would go with me but would be careful what bars etc to go in, and would pick a hotel that wasn't too central because of the noise.

Florence is divine because it is just so "Italian". It's everything that you know about Italy, all rolled into one. The art, the buildings, the art, the buildings, Michaelangelo, Raphael, the Medicis (who built most of what you see in Florence, and if they didn't then they stole it from someone :D), and the food and wine.

Oh, and I got engaged there last year. Pretty special!

I just got back from Prague and it is sooo wonderful!!!

2-3 inches of snow everywhere, nice people, cheap food & beer, & so much history!!

We also went to Carlos Vary - the Spa Town for a day and that was just soooo pretty.

Another thing about Florence (and Rome, to a certain extent) is the ice cream. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Yum.

Depends if you want a city break or a resort. Florence is great, but don't discount places like Sorrento and Taormina.

    What is your preferred airport?

  • I'd recommend Prague. It's absolutely beautiful everywhere you look, not like most cities where you have to travel from one sight to another. There are free classical concerts every night in the churches & good opera & ballet perfomances at a whole range of venues & prices. We went to an open air opera in a courtyard of one of their bigger buildings - tickets about £5 each & it was enthralling. We went about 7 years ago, & the food etc was all good & cheap.
