Driving a friends van, insurance advice....

Hi, a friend has bought a small van which he wants to have signed with his business logo and details. He wants me to drive it, which is mostly a short commute each day, plus a little sd&p, for the main purpose of advertising his business.

This means I can do without my car, which is up for insurance renewal end of this month.

Ive just tried getting a quote for the van and found a lot of insurers wont cover because i am not the registered keeper.

Does anyone know what I can do to get a decent quote as I have 2 years no claims driving a personal car and I am 27 years old.

thanks

Can you not go as a name driver on your mates insurance? Also you dont mention if you've tried the 'compare' sites (you probably have) but you should find a few on there.

  • i will ask my mate if I can do this. I figured if he is offering me the van and all i have to do is drive it, get insured and put fuel in then i cant go wrong? got to be cheaper than running my own car. I did try the compare sites but I only got a handful of quotes because most would not quote due to registered keeper not being myself. the quotes I did get were more than my car renewal quote which seemed a bit strange.

Vans do cost more to insure. Think about it from an insurers point of view. They are attractive theft targets for a start. Second, it seems odd from their point of view that you are driving a commercial vehicle but not using if for business purposes.

Thirdly, you are trying to insurer a vehicle you don't own. This presents a higher degree of "moral hazzard" to the insurer. Just as someone in a let property, it isn't your's so you will be perceved to be more likley to not take as much care over it as you would if it was your own.

In principle though, there should not be too much trouble but you will need to expect it to cost more than your vehicle renewal.

Getting your mate to insurer his vehicle with you a a named MAIN driver may be cheaper, but remember you won't be building up any NCD while you do that!!!
  • The van is his property so it needs to be insured in his name really, or possibly the company's name with you as the driver. Because you don't own the vehicle, you don't have an insurable interest in it, and also the cover will stipulate business use, which you need really, as you are acting in the interests of the business.

I think if you have a sign written van then it needs to be insured for business purposes.
A friend of mine had insurance payout refused because he had his company name on his peugeot car that was insured for sdp and commuting.
