Oh Heck! French buyer has opened a dispute!

I posted an Ebay item to France on the 3rd of this month and according to the buyer it just arrived this morning - broken!
It was sent by Royal Mail International small packages and I have the receipt.
I've asked the buyer (politely!) to send photos. of the damage, but I've just noticed he's already opened a Paypal 'Item not as described' dispute.
What do I do now - this is the first problem I've ever had.
And the package must have been dropped off the blooming Eiffel Tower to have broken; I packed it within an inch of its life!

Heeeelllp anyone!?
I would have refunded the buyer immediately on the 'photographic evidence' - is he jumping the gun opening the dispute straight away?"I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0 -
was there insurance with the postage? you could refund the buyer and claim from that...
sorry im not more use...someone with more knowledge will probably reply soon

The postage was covered for up to £39 - the item was £42, so I'll lose a little; it's his attitude that's annoyed me."I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0

The buyer may be genuine or a scammer. Either way I would answer via the dispute and politely request photos of the item and packaging.
Perhaps they do not realise that they will need to send item back for a refund. If they are genuine and are using dispute as a back up perhaps they will provide the photos.0 -
Thanks; the buyer does say he has photos - I've just not received them yet."I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0

I have this problem too (waiting for photos)! Except my buyer is in the UK... I'd love to know whether the rules are the same whether the buyer is in the UK or abroad and they HAVE to send it back.
I know what you mean about it annoying you if they're lying. If you aim for the moon if you miss at least you will land among the stars!0 -
Sorry to tell you this, but if he opens a paypal dispute, you will lose.
Photos won't matter I'm afraid - I know from experience.
I'd start on the claim process if I were you.
Sorry to be so gloomy, but better to tell you the truth I think.0 -
only problem is royal mail only accept fault if the damage happened in their hands
you may have a fight on your hands if the damage occured once it left the UK0 -
