Limited wireless connection via Sky router

Hi guys,
Until recently I connected to the Internet via a wireless Netgear connection (router and card in side of laptop). Connection was good all aroudn the house and garden.
I have since gone to Sky and have had to use their router. Now my connection is pretty much limited to being wireless in the same room as my router, which is not very useful!
Has anyone else had this problem and know of a solution?
Thank you!

Hmmm,
Does your laptop pick up other wireless networks? If so, I wonder if the Sky router is using the same frequency channel as another nearby network which won't help. You should be able to change this my pointing your web browser at the router's configuration pages. Check your documentation on how to do this.
Are the antennas (if applicable) correctly screwed in?0 -
as above it could be down to the channel you are on, the sky router comes on channel 11, try some of the others and see what you get. remember to check your card in the laptop is set to receive the right channel or that its set to auto.0

Where would I find the channel? I'll have a look through documentation as you suggest....
No anetenna on this router (there was one on my old Netgear one).
Thanks for your help!0 -
The channel setting is probably only a problem if it's clashing with another nearby wireless network. Some routers have an adjustable signal strength setting but I doubt it'd be set to less than 100% by default. What's the make/model of the Sky router?0

generally either type 192.168.0.1 into your browser or type "home" and it will ask you to login.
there enter login as sky and user as admin and it will show you the page.
with their new routers the menu has changed from the netgear. you can either ask sky for help or rummage around in the menu (sorry im not familiar with the new menu) to change the channels.
if you have a net gear router then click on wireless settings and you can change the channel from the 3/4th drop down menu. try channel 6 or 10. they are the next best alternatives.Scrimping and saving!0 -
