Out dog Stella, has just come home after having an emergency hysterectomy soon after contracting Pyometra. For those that don't know,Pyometra is an infection, and according to our vet, there is internal and external.

Internal is where the infection stays in the womb, and is the worse of the two, whereas external is where it leaks out of the vagina,in the form of a discahrge, and is less of a threat. The kidneys and liver can also suffer if it is not treated. If not treated asap, the result can be that your pet can die.

What happened to us was that Stella started to feel unwell last week,so a trip to the vets was arranged, and the vet first thought that she had a water infection, and treated her accordingly. However as the week went on,she seemed to get no better, and we phoned the vet late on Sunday evening, and the vet told us to finish her tablets, but if she got no better, then to bring her in this morning, but if it couldn't wait, then a Monday call would have been required as an emergency.

The wife took her in this morning after watching her lick herself constantly, and noticing a discharge.Upon arriving at the vets, her vet Laura, confirmed that Pyometra was the cause, and she was kept in and the operation done asap.

She has now arrived home, and is a little sore and groggy, but at least she's alive because it was caught in time.Pyometra is usually found in !!!!!es that have not yet been spayed, and the funny thing is she was booked to be spayed at the beginning of May,which will not now need doing.

If you suspect your girl may have it,then do her and yourself a favour, and get her to the vets IMMEDIATELY.

We are also glad she is insured,as the whole procedure has cost just short of £800.Ouch!!!!!

Anyhow,just a few pics............

Did someone call?

Thank goodness she is ok ... whew!!!

This is a nasty nasty thing and the few cases I have known of it, the dogs haven't made it through so yes, the most important thing is to get your pet straight to the vet ... !!

Every best wish for Stella's fast recovery!

Sorry about the big pics, don't know what happened there.

Perhaps if someone can shrink them, then feel free.

  • Poor Stella and poor you - I bet it was very worrying for you. Thanks for posting this, a lot of people are ignorant about the risks of pyo in unspeyed b1tches - its also very moneysaving to get your b1tch speyed, as a soey costs about £120 as opposed to much bigger costs, and higher risks of an op done to remedy pyo. (I read somewhere than over 50% of unspeyed older b1tches will eventually contract pyo) - thank goodness Stella is fit and young. I hope she has a speedy recovery. In hindsight, I wonder if this is why she was being picky with her food, or is that a long standing habit?

    Thanks guys.

As you say FC,it could have been the reason why she was off her food, but we have read that once the op is done and she makes a recovery, she'll eat as a normal dog does.

We just think it's a lot for an 11 month old hound to go through, and hopefully youth is on her side.

Well she was in a bit of pain today,so the wife whisked her back to the vet, where she was given a dose of painkiller in injection form, and some liquid painkiller to be given when necessary.

As I came home and walked through the door,I was greeted with the usual waggy tail, and the excitement that we have become familiar with.It just about brought tears to my eyes.

She's a bit of allsorts really, but does have terrier in her.We thought at first she was a Patterdale, but we are not 100%.One thing is for sure, when she runs after her ball, she goes like a whippet!!!!

She's laid on her blanket pad at the moment, resting, and she keeps lifting her head up to look at me.

It hurts to know what she went through yesterday at such a young age,but at least we know it was for the best, and more than likely saved her life.

I will try to get some better pics in the next few days, and keep charting her progress.

  • 800 reasons to spay your dog (when its £30 under Dogs Trust there is no excuse). Most recover really well though, so am really glad that youre outcome was good.
