i too was finding cartridges really expensive so took advantage of the offer recently on here for a canon printer with a £10 back offer which in effect meant that the offer worked out cheaper than buying new cartridges. however did not have it long before cartridges ran out and trying to save somemoney bought replacements from the ink club yet only had them couple of weeks and they have run out too. buying the proper canon ones are expensive and buying another printer wouldbe cheaper but do not want a cupboard full of printers as not very green. what am i doing wrong. i dont use them alot, in fact very little. does anyone have any suggeations to make this process a little cheaper?

The ink cartridges that come with printers are virtually never as full as the replacements which you buy.
I don't know why your compatible cartrige didn't last long - maybe the printer just isn't very economical.
Supermarkets like Tesco do a lot of compatible cartridges which I have found to be a lot cheaper and work OK too. Don't use your printer for photo printing as that is cheaper in bulk from SD card or CD these days (Boots Tesco etc.)
If you do decide on a replacement printer make sure you know what cartridges it uses and that you can get them easily locally. Intenet is OK but you will be paying the post one way or another. Of course that may be cheaper than a special trip to the supermarket too so keep spares handy.0 -
The ink you got with the printer would have been trial cartridges, just enough to allow you to print a few pictures out the box. Noone wants to get a new printer home only to find they need to go out again and buy ink for it.SIMPLE SIMON - Met a pie man going to the fair. Try re-inking the cartridges yourself it's quite easy, you can get all the infomation from https://www.jrinkjet.com"Imagination is more Important than knowledge"0

Also there is a big feature in the current computer shopper magazine that tells you all about this, and describes the process of re-inking yourself. It includes images to illustrate the whole process. Might be worth a look if your not sure what to do.
Good luck!SIMPLE SIMON - Met a pie man going to the fair. Said Simple Simon to the pie man, "What have you got there?" Said the pie man unto Simon, "Pies, you simpleton!"0 -
Are you doing a lot of printing? if so look for a CISS. I have one on my printer and it makes printing costs next to nothing per print.Have my first business premises (+4th business) 01/11/2017

It's a general rule that the cheaper the printer, the more expensive the cartriges; for example, I sold a brand new All In One HP Printer with Card Reader and LCD screen on eBay and it went for 99p- this is because the cartriges are £35 a pop! Companies only offer cheap printers (which they normally make a loss on) so they can sting you in the pocket when its time to buy new cartriges. Thats why you always get messages saying 'ONLY BUY OFFICIAL CARTRIGES' and when you don't, you are always reminded that 'IT ALWAYS IMAPCTS ON PRINT QUALITY' (which is a lie). I suggest you buy an Epson printer. The cartriges are cheap- about £6 online and the printers aren't that dear anyway- we got are All In One from Tesco for £45.The quickest way to become a millionaire is start off as a billionaire and go into the airline business.

Me too (£40 iirc) and they also sold compatible cartridges dirt cheap which is why I suggested that route.
I have tried refilling cartridges in the past. Maybe it's just my sausage fingers but I always got more ink over my hands than in the cartridge. One rather expensive leak that stuffed the printer and a carpet put me off that idea for good.0 -
I have to agree with Bowling for Gold, cheap printers can cost a fortune to refill, Lexmark are really bad for this.
I also have to agree that epson are one of the best on this front, I recently bought a 6 colour photo printer (R265) which I got fot £20. With most epsons you can get compatible cartridges for £1-£2.50.
If you do a high volume of printing I would recommend a CISS, mine cost just over £20 and has 100ml of ink in all 6 colours. When that runs low its really cheap to just keep refilling the containers at the side of the printers. If you do go this route I would also recommend a waste ink tank as you can basically only clean the heads so many times before the waste tank fills up and renders the printer useless. This bypasses to a tank outside the printer which you just empty when it needs it.Have my first business premises (+4th business) 01/11/2017
