Free MP3 and Music downloads - suggestions?

I was a big fan of download.com which was run by Cnet and I downloaded stuff quite regularly by up and coming musicians plus the occasional free track by someone well known. I really enjoyed it - the layout of the site, the range of music, the artists' own comments. But it turns out Cnet and last fm are both owned by cbs who has now closed down download.com (and mp3.com too) and redirects you to last fm.:mad:

The stuff which everyone had posted onto download.com was just erased, and the trouble is there is a lot less on last fm - smaller range and all the stuff which had been on cnet download.com has just been lost.

Does anyone know of any other sites where there is free music to listen to and download - maybe overseas sites but accessible in the UK. ?

You could check out Jamendo, ccMixter or OC Remix, but you're unlikely to find any music from the more well-known artists.

There's also Spotify, but that only allows you to listen to music...

there are loads of free podcasts on itunes.

also the bbc. http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/ 1 or 2 music shows as well as chat!
