post office as a choice?

I haven't seen you mention the po and they offer cheaper line rental, lots of free overseas calls and also free calls to mobiles over the weekend. The current 20 overseas countries is increasing from 1st June to 40. Also if you call another po homephone customer that is free for up to an hour at any time. look forward to hearing some replies.

Welcome to the MSE forums debbyp.

Post Office home phone gets mentioned regularly - for the reasons you mention and the fact that they don't require subscribers to agree to a 12 month contract.

The following is a typical thread:

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Just ordered it. Having a bit of hassle at the minute but I believe its openreach's fault. They gave me a date of the 27th April for a line installation so took it off work but they have rang to say they cant do it until May. Argued a bit and now they are coming on the 27th again.

The user reviews on reviewcentre appear to be ever so slightly out of kilter with reviews on here, though (yes, i was understating it, lol). No idea why....

    http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews85601.html

    Average Ratings Reception 3.6/10
    Customer Service 2.1/10
    Reliability 2.8/10
    Extra Features 2.4/10
    Value for Money 3.6/10
    Reviewer Rating 1.9/10
    Overall Rating 1.9/10

Their daytime rates are BT-ish exhorbitant and no way of getting them for free/inclusive AFAICT. If you haven't got a mobile contract and can wait until the weekend to call people on their mobiles I suppose that's a very good deal. Plus there are price rises imminent...

    Hi,
As with most suppliers, I can say that PO can be both very good and very bad. I've experienced both.
:jI signed up for Homephone a year ago and they took over my line without any bother at all. They have provide me a cheap (£12 per month inc. line rental) and reliable phone service. I use loads of free calls and barely make a chargable one ever, even to the USA. My son phones his mates on mobiles at the weekend for nothing. It is a really good service.
    BUT...
 My father joined PO Homephone & Broadband on the same day and in the same area as me. His BB NEVER worked despite many calls to the tech/help line. He was given numerous excuses and new "live" dates but these never happened. He died in April 2008 and they are still billing him (one year on), addressing him as "The Late Mr..." for the current use of his BB service, even though they have discontinued his telephone line (and he is dead)!!! I've called their "Special Provisoining" team many times and even had the Citizens' Advice to do so too, but still they keep billing. They have stated to the CAB that dying is not a reason for cancelling the contract. (but I've not had anything this month, so who knows, they might have given up at last:confused:)
Note to Self: When posting, remember to keep within "forum rules" to avoid upsetting other "interested parties"

Crikey. Really sorry to read what has been happening here. Personally, if the intervention of the CAB doesn't resolve this issue to your satisaction, I would approach the Ombudsman. I'm sure they would be equally appalled at this. This seems like a totally appalling experience and surely wouldn't have happened with a more customer-focused company. Good luck. This is why one should take care being influenced by recommendations for companies on here - you can never be sure whether they are unsolicited or not. Certainly the PO Phone's user reviews elsewhere on the net (an example I linked to in my earlier post in this thread) wouldn't exactly be temting me to beat a path to their door.
