i'm just trying to find some advice.
i'm just about to sign a lease on a small office, which i'm gonna use as storage space, & somewhere to have a desk & maybe file all my bills.
i need to move a load of stuff out of my house while we do some home improvements, it's gonna take around 9-12 months - i don't have a spare room at home, hence the need for external space.
what i'm trying to find out is will the tax office need to be informed, as i have to pay business rates on the office - will they think i'm running a business from there?
any advice would be greatly appreciated, as i want to make sure i don't do anything wrong!!

I don't see why you would need to inform the tax office. If they think you ARE running a business, you can demonstrate that you're not! (As in, no extra income!)
But is an office the most cost effective way of doing this? We had all our furniture in store for a while, if we'd had a big enough storage area I'm sure we could have kept a desk in there and worked at it during the day ... Don't think there were power sockets.
Plus I worked from someone's garden shed for a while, OK it wasn't the warmest office but it was a well-insulated brick-built shed and as long as it's not damp I would have thought you'd be OK. Or we have a caravan in our garden which we also used as an office for a while, if you've got somewhere you could park one of those ...
And welcome to the boards. BTW if you're anywhere near Bristol I'm sure the caravan could be put at your disposal ...Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
thanks for your reply sue.
i've been looking for self storage space, but there's nowhere near enough to me, so that i could go every day if necessary, and most self storage places are only accessible through the day - i work days, & would need access on evenings and weekends. if i had the room i'd happily have a caravan, but i don't have a driveway, and unfortunately, i'm nowhere near bristol - i'm up in west yorkshire.
all great ideas, but i'm getting desperate for space now, so i'm gonna need to take this.
i might look into starting a business, then at least i'd have somewhere to work from already!!
thanks again,
