Where to get low cost or help with neutering of kitten?

I have a 6 month male kitten which we took in as a stray a few months ago and i now need to get him neutered. I had saved up the £68 my local vet is going to charge but my other cat was hit by a car(very lucky minor injuries but still a fortune) and i've had to put that towards the vet bill, luckily hes insured but the excess is £65 and i have to pay the entire amount upfront before the insurance will pay out so i've already had to borrow hundreds.
Also due to circumstances i have had to claim income support so money is really tight at the moment.
I have heard that i may now be eligable for help towards the cost, i've tried contacting my local rspca office but they are shut for 2 weeks holiday and the rspca site contact links don't work.
I'm also not in a pdsa catchment area for free treatment and they don't help towards the cost of neutering.
Also Can i go to any vet? or does it have to be in the area i live, we have 2 in our small town who are charging near on £70, not sure if it will be cheaper in another town but on researching the cost on the internet i seem to have a very expensive vet or the prices on the internet are out of date!!
any help or advice greatly received!!

In my area, some small local animal charities offer free or low cost neutering for pets.

If you get a local paper, have a look in the small ads at the back as sometimes you get the charities that offer such a service advertising there.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Try ringing your local Citizens Advice Bureau - they should have details of things like this.

Good luck. So glad you are having her neutered

    Here you go:

The current value of the vouchers is £26 for female cats and £20 for male cats.

    oH, rspca:

    RSPCA Neutering Vouchers:
Low-cost neutering vouchers are available from most RSPCA branches. Contact your nearest branch, or if you don't have a branch near you, call their national helpline on: 0300 1234 555. Details of your local RSPCA can be found by choosing your area from the drop-down menu below.

Give them a ring - number on that link - and also ask them about vets in your area/costs

Neutering Assistance: The branch can also assist in the cost of neutering your cat, to reduce the number of future strays. For neutering vouchers please call: 01228 536168.

    thanks for all the advice.

I don't live near carlisle but i've contacted cats protection and they are sending me a £20 voucher. They also advised ringing neighbouring towns to see what their prices and if they will do it as the average is £20-£40 for a male cat so i definately have an expensive vet!!
