Driver or Car?

Can anyone shed light on why I as a driver, earn no claims bonus on my car insurance BUT if I want to insure an additional car, I have to start with 0% n.c.b.?

This seems wrong and is surely a way that insurance companies make extra money out of us. As I can only drive one car at any time and I am the same driver that has previously earned the no claims bonus, shouldn't this apply to any car that we own/drive?

No - you are earning a NCB on the policy you already have, and it only applies to that policy.
Just because a car is not being drvien doesn't mean it's not covered by insurance for such events as theft and fire.

    - NCD is a marketing tool not an actuarial one
    - It is a no CLAIMS bonus not a no incident bonus
    - As maninthestreet says, cover does not stop while you are not driving. There are both accidental damage and third party risks associated with a parked vehicle. There are also added benifits that come with fully comp policies that could be used while you are not driving, like legal protection, legal helplines, courtesy vehicles and driving other cars.

Many companies and brokers will be able to offer you an introductory discount for NCD built up on another vehicle.

Also, if the additional vehicle you want to insure is more risky than the other one, you can transfer the discount to that vehicle, and start with the 0% (or introductory discount) on the less risky vehicle.

My fiance has two cars; one is his daily drive and the other is a show car which is garaged for much of the time. He got his NCB applied to both cars on Admiral's MultiCar policy. They will not offer this, and may deny that they will do it, but if you keep asking they will. It took some nagging, but they did it.

Sadly he had some unrelated problems with Admiral later on (they took money from his bank account without notification etc) so he switched back to his previous insurer, MoreThan. They also applied the NCB to both of his cars when asked.

He now pays £40 a month for two cars, fully comp.

It is worth asking your insurer and shopping around if they refuse.
