Unsure about item on credit report

I am wanting to apply for a new 0% balance transfer credit card, and decided to send for my credit files to check before I applied.

I have never checked my credit file before and received my Experian one this morning. It has a Mint card listed from 1996-2001, I have never had a Mint card but did used to have an RBS Advanta card - is this the same company?

The report for this says the account was settled in May 2001, but it also says "the number of status 3+ is 2", this means that on 2 occasions I was 3 months late with a payment. I know for a fact that I have NEVER been this late with any of my payments on any debts I have had.

Is it too late to do anything about this now? I don't think I can prove that I was never 3 months late with my payments. Will it affect any application for a credit card I make now?

Thanks!

Usually unless your credit history requires a major correction, its not a good idea to ask for it to be corrected as that would also count against you.

I signed up and have now got my report. I emailed them to cancel the report. Is this the right way to do it? Or should I have done something else?
