Elephant.co.uk Car insurance

My car insurance is with Elephant.co.uk and have been with them for nearly 3 years now. My renewal is due next month, i'm awaiting my renweal documents to be sent to me any day now. But i want to look around for any possible better deals and if found, want to cancel my policy with elephant on renewal. Can anyone tell me if they have any bad experience with them and any tips can be given?

What are the costs of the cancellation? (if any)

Thank you for any help :)

You are not cancelling so there is no cost. You are just telling them you don't want to renew. Essentialy, they are just putting forward an invitation to treat or an offer to you for another years contract (depending on the policy conditions).

You should not have any problems with them, they can't put any barriers in the way of you not wanting to renew the contract.

I don't know if elephant have an automatic renewal clause, but just to make sure give them a call once you have your renewal invitation to make sure they understand that, and send them a letter to the same effect by first class post.

Your renewal invitation should be sent 21 days in advance of renewal.

Keep this letter as it should show proof of your no claims discount entitlement.

Before you call Elephant, do your shopping around and get quotes for the cover you want. If using price comparison websites go though to the insurers website and make sure you check all the details in terms of the cover you want with the excess you want.

When you call Elephant they may well offer to price match your quote.

I have had a great experience with Elephant when renewing. I got my renewal quote through from them - £285. So thinking to better it, I went on Admiral's website (who own Elephant) and got a quote from them of £200. I emailed Elephant to tell them and ask if they could match it, and they not only matched it, they bettered it by £15. So definitely get some quotes and try to get them to match it.

Edit to add: I think Elephant do have an auto-renewal system but you can just call or email them to cancel. You have to post back the motor insurance certificate they send you, but they should give you a freepost address for it.
  • Thank you both, thats great info for me!

Does anyone know if it is possible to switch from paying annually to monthly direct debit on renewal?

It should be, but you will need to give them a call. It costs a lot to do this though so if you can afford to pay upfront. All you are doing with DD is paying for the whole lot up front on credit and being charged an APR on that credit (usualy a high one!).
  • Make sure you get confirmation of the cancellation of the insurance policy or if you have opted out of the automatic renewal.

If you don't, the company will relieve you of the fee for renewal of the policy whether you want it or not.
