The Christmas markets in Alsace are amazing. Strasbourg has lots of markets. The main one is in front of the Cathedral (the most spectacular cathedral I have ever seen). There is a smaller one at Colmar which is a gorgeous town and even nicer at Christmas, and has a Children's market. It is the best Christmas market I have been to. The smaller towns such as Kaysersberg also have markets.

richardw, have you been to Luxembourg for the xmas markets? Are they nice? Did you travel around to nearby countries to check out their markets?

Has anyone rented a car that time of year to get between different locations? I am wondering if the snow won't be a nuisance. Can someone share how they did this? Is the train preferable? Any moneysaving tips to use the train? I think German trains used to have weekend group rates, not sure nowawadays.
