Silly question re. phone cards in the USA

Silly question but never used one before. Would some kind soul please explain how to use these in the US ? Are there special phone card phones, do you insert them at the phone or do they work differently. Thanks,

The ones I've used have had a strip that you scratch off. Underneath is a telephone number that you ring to register the card to you. Then you're given directions for each time you use it.
Some of these work out very cheap to call UK and some have no time limit, some 3 months, etc.
