I use plain wheat flour and then add a bit (maybe a 1/5 ot total flour) of fine polenta.

I make chappatis (sp?) too. I don't have a special board though. They are a bit hit and miss (esp as I often I only have wholmeal bread flour). They still mostly all puff up on the gas flame, though.

I used the recipe in Hugh fearnley Whittingstalls Family Cookbook and it was fab. So simple and cheap:

    Makes 8 -

250g plain flour (plus extra for rolling out)
    1 tsp Salt
1 tbsp olive or sunflower oil
    150ml warm water

Sift flour into mixing bowl with salt. Put oil in jug of the warm water then pour liqui over flour stirring well, eventually using your hands. Knead for about 5 mins. Cover dough and let rest for 15 mins.

Divide dough into 8 pieces, and then roll out each into a flat circle (ahem - or whatever shape you can manage!!). Get frying pan really hot (no oil) then turn heat down med-low. Put rolled out flatbread on pan for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Turn over and do other side. easy peasy.

Although has to be said does take some time. I did 2 lots one time and froze half. But tbh they are so yummy and cheap I don't mind doing them.

Thanks for the recipe, I've just tried it and they turned out beautifully (and I had to use SR flour). This is especially handy for me as I have to watch cholesterol and the olive oil is perfect. I always have to buy the Pataks naan version (which aren't quite big enough for a wrap) as the other brands have too much fat. I think I'll also try them as burittos as they are very soft and should work well.

You'll get tons of different variations in recipies and flavours in mexican cookbooks. I'm still threatening to make them but I can't decide if the time, effort and cost makes it worthwhile.
Made some last night from a Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall recipe, they're fantastic. When I say I made tham, I mean DH did them and I made the tea. They were excellent, and so easy to make and best of all hardly any washing up! Think they'll be ideal to take next time we go camping, I'll make a batch up and cook them when we get there.

    I make mine.
Very easy. Worth doing yourself rather than buying them.

 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
  • M+S do lovely wholemeal wraps. They are tasty and seem to freeze much better than the white ones - I've had problems with the white wraps sticking together but the wholemeal ones don't.

M+S :o - I know, not really moneysaving, but I keep a packet in the freezer at work so I can make my own lunch - cheaper and tastier than the sandwich shop, so it's kind of moneysaving. And anyway, I bought them with vouchers I earned from surveys. :)

I'm veggie so I fill mine with avocado, hummus and lots of salad. Yum!

  • thanks for bumping this up, we buy wraps nearly every week for OHs lunch pack. While they are not massively expensive (about 80p in Sainsburys), if I can make them myself on a Sunday, it will be tastier, and healthier and cheaper :j !

80p a week works out at around £40 a year just on wraps
