Not worth the paper they are written on, They will just say your claim is due to wear and tear.

This site will help save you money and get the best out of your VW.

    I wouldn't bother.

It's all well and good having a huge list of covered items, but try claiming when the wheel bearing starts to go (gets noisy).
They will laugh at you and simply say it is wear and tear, same for CV Joints and such.

The items have to fail catastrophically for you to be in with even a chance of a claim. Even then you will be back on here asking about your legal rights because they are refusing to pay out.

All cars are a risk. Save your £20 in a savings pot for when things go wrong (most likely you will have more in the pot at the end of the year than you have spent)

what model of golf is it? Do you know the power output of the engine?
We could probably tell you what the common problems are from experience
E.g most common ones are (with rough part prices)
    MAF/Air Mass Meter £70
    Coolant Temp Sender £12
    Coolant reservouir bottle £8
    Rear Axle Mount Bushes £25

The PD engines require special oil at £40+ for 5 litres
The 150BHP has been known to wear the Cams and cause major engine damage if correct oil has not been used.

A well looked after car should get you some good fuel economy, especially on long motorway journeys so that's a plus point.
  • It is peace of mind - but £350 would pay for a lot of repairs over just 1 year, in my opinion because you know the car's history i.e. no major problems so far, it wouldn't be worth it.

Hi goldspanners, was really hoping for something a little more constructive.

I imagine you think car insurance is also pointless?

    why would you think that?
ive always insured my cars and happen to think it is worth while.

if you were really looking for something a bit more constructive them maybe using the search bar at the top of every page would have been a bit more "constructive" you would then have found that most car warranties are not worth the paper they are written on,they will blame you for everything rather than say, oh well you've paid £300 a year,so here have a nice new engine seen as you blew yours up. it doesnt work that way im afraid.
and if your looking at buying a particular model which has been suggested to you as having problems including engine failure then why not look for something that has less chance of going wrong,or even if it does go wrong its slightly cheaper to repair.
a car worth £3000 with 90k miles on it is likely to have something wrong with it or something about to go wrong with it,the warranty company wont pay out for every tiny little thing that goes wrong, infact i doubt they would pay for any, stick your money into a savings account and use this to repair your car when things start to go wrong.
unfortunatly cars will, and do go wrong sometimes, so you should be prepared for it, but warranties arent the way to do this.

hope this was constructive enough for you.;)

As above the PD150 engines arnt the best but the PD130 is a very good engine.

As for servicing, depending on where you are in the country there are losts of VW specialists.
  • Why pay a warranty IN CASE something like this may happen when IF it does...chances are it may be cheaper to fix than the warranty actually costs

    Hi loofer,

It'll be the PS 130 TDi (so the common engine failure is less likely to occur due to not having such stressed cams!).

I've heard the ones you mentioned, along with some turbo failures (£700+).

Thanks for the input people, I'll put it into the savings and see how I do in 12 months time ;)
