2nd hand cars and haggle price?!
Hi Guys,
I have been trawling this forum for the past week in order to help me with the purchase of a car.
I have max £2500 and I am looking at buying a less than 1.3l petrol/ 1.6l diesel, hopefully less than 60k and up to 5 yrs old (my autotrader search!).
I have been searching on the autotrader and there are lots around the £3000 mark - would I have a chance with my £2500 offer? Or should I ask how long is a piece of string, lol?
I know nothing about these things but after nosy on here I'm concentrating on finding a Japanese car with fsh. Am I looking in the right direction?
Cheers

theres no harm in asking, i would be surprised if you didnt get close to your £2500 offer on a car advertised at £3000. and going jap would be a good idea.

Very interesting reading that.
I have my eye on a car that is currently on sale for £5500 but not sure what to go in as my first offer.0 -
OP - find out what prices the cars you're interested in and make your own mind up from that. I gt people coming in wanting money off just for the sake of asking or they use the "current economic climate" bollox. But a car is worth what a car is worth.
There is no harm in asking. You get two chances lol.0 -
Find out what Glass' trade in price is then you can figure out what you think a fair margin on the car is. Remember if buying from a dealer they will be offering some sort of warranty and that adds risk at their end.
If you want to get the same car cheaper then buy privately without any implied warranty.0 -

Look at it, Ask him have many people been interested (He will say yes), Test drive it, Say you like it, Say you want it..
Salesman will be looking for a sale, tell him how much you want to spend (£4600). He will say no, too low.
Leave your number, smile & joke with him, get into car and leave. Expect a phone call.0 -
Hi,
Thank you for being so helpful! I'll start looking properly now and try out my haggling skills!
I was thinking that I would need to check that the car has had its cambelt changed at 60k ish if I'm looking for a car around that milage. Please could you tell me what else I need to look out for?
Thanks

My advice, take somebody that knows about cars to check it over before finally agreeing to buy.0
