Student account with overdraft

Hi,

Can anyone tell me what banks offer student accounts with an overdraft that do not need the student studying presently?

I have a confirmed university place in September 2009 however I wish to open an account now with an overdraft.

Thanks.

    Not many people will. HSBC won't. Halifax won't. Lloyds won't.

    Smile do from what I have heard around on this forum.

    Using overdraft before you even get to uni is worst idea ever though.

    From personal experience -

    The following DO:

    * Smile: guarantee £1000, just need to pay in £300 in a lump sum. You can apply online and get the overdraft up to 6 months before your course starts (i.e. now). You might want to check the Cooperative Bank though, as they might have the same policy but actually have a higher overdraft on offer of £1400.

    * Halifax: might, but depends on your credit rating and the attitude of the branch advisor!

    The following DON'T (requiring you to wait until September):

    * HSBC - often don't even give the promised £1000, just £750
    * NatWest
    * Abbey

    ^^ HSBC I have got £1000 and have been told if I want more I just can go into branch and ask, but then again I have banked with them for almost 10 years now lol.
  • Lloyds Tsb will open a pre student account for you I think you get a £150 overdraft no more until you show your UCAS confirmation letter.

    I have to ask, why are you so keen to get an overdraft right now?

    Be aware that it's not free money that the bank gives (as I recount from someone who told me their overdraft horror story), and they can ask it back for any time. Plus, it's another millstone around your neck debt-wise.

    I would just sit it out and wait until September.

    The full student package has not yet been made public for 2009 but expect to get between £750 and £1500 for your first year provided you do not have adverse credit information on your credit files.
