Car Insurance Excess

i have been using the comparison websites as per the advice from this website.

all of the quotes have a standard minimum of £250 excess... i have been choosing £0 voluntary excess, but every quote seems to have minimum £250 compulsory excess.

is this compulsory excess because i am only 22 years old?

so does this mean if i was to claim or someone was to claim against me, i would have to pay £250 before my insurance company does anything?

the cheapest quote i can find is much cheaper than the rest, but is asking for a minimum of £50 voluntary excess,... so that would bring my total excess up to £300.... i dont even want to think about paying that much if something was to happen.

    Simply put.........yes!

Remember - you are only liable for the XS if its a fault claim (ie. a claim your own insurer is paying out for). If someone else causes the accident then you shouldn't have to pay - and if you did you should be able to claim it back.

For a 22 year old I would say any XS under £400 is not bad going - especially if you've had a full UK license for less than a year.

Just out of interest - is the saving between a £250 XS and a £300 XS more than £50 - if so you should definately take the higher XS option.

And remember - nobody ever said driving was cheap! Hope some of this helps
Top Tip is £450 away from clearing the overdraft and being debt free
