Vegetables in the front garden?
I would really love a proper vegatable garden and would pefer raised beds as I have a back injury.
Over the last five years I have gradually planted up my small back garden with flowers and shrubs and have only a very small space for fruit and veg. I have started growing veg and salad in containers this year.
My front garden -also fairly small - is mainly narrow beds surrounding a small lawn. I have done little work on this, so am now ready to start. What I would really like to use it for is veg, fruit and herbs. As the space is small I would really need to devote the garden solely to these to get a reasonable crop for the two of us to eat.
I have really lovely neighbours and would hate to upset them. Do you think it is unfair to use a front garden for fruit and veg? I intend asking my neighbours of course, but they may say yes just to be nice neighbours rather than because its what they want.

I cant imagine for one minute anyone objecting, the sort of front gardens folk complain about are the ones with rubbish or bind weed in. It is your garden not theirs.
Keep an eye out for a mse called caterina, she has put raised beds in her front garden (back garden full up) the beds look great but weren't planted up when I saw them, she's away at the mo,back in the next couple of days but will be happy to advise you I'm sure.
edit: forgot to say I have herbs in mine and will shortly be putting tubs of spinach and carrots, also running out of space!I have had tumbling toms from hanging baskets at the front but dont think they were happy, did get enough sun0 -
plant away. veg in front gardens looks great :T. Cant imagine why any one would complain. Better than rubbish, weeds or a general mess.0

I personally wouldn't mind either. I have always kept the front tidy - I just haven't done much with it. Due to my back injury, I would need to get someone in to make the raised beds and lay paths between. His standard of work is very high, so I know they will look good. I love spending time in the garden and would keep it tidy all year.0

In a street where a friend of mine lives due to the back gardens on one side being north facing lots of people planted herbs and veg in their front gardens.
As veg and herb plants can be attractive in their own right no one on the other side of the road had a problem with it.
The main thing they were worried about was the plants in containers being stolen or the crops being stolen but nothing happened.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

I grow in mine, the neighbours can like it or lump it, I'm not doing anything wrong

They don't mind at all tbh.
Stick a few flowers in there as well, which will help the growing anyway and most people won't even notice. Last year I grew all kinds of things in mine, including full size tomato and courgette plants, not only did no one say anything, when I was talking about it later to the neighbours, they all went...... oh did you, we never saw that :rolleyes:Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0
