Bank holiday pay

I work in retail and if you choose to work a bank holiday you get paid time and a half. However if you choose not to work it you still get paid for a whole day. So i was thinking is it worth working a bank holiday. Lets say for example i get paid £5 a hour i could stay at home and get paid this where if i went to work i would get pai £7.50 an hour so really im only getting £2.50 to go to work. Is this correct or have i got everything muddled up?

Where I work, you get paid normal hours if you don't work bank holiday.
And you get paid normal hours plus double time overtime if you go into work."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
Where I work if you work a bank holiday you get no extra pay but you get the day back to have off when you want. We have to work bank holidays on a rota on this basis and end up doing about 2 out of the 8 per yearBaby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0

I done a 11 hour shift last Friday (bank holiday) and I'm not sure if I got paid any extra for doing so, some staff say I do and some staff said I didn't. I think I've got a day in "lieu" though. The Very Right Honourable Lady Tarry of the Alphabetty thread-I just love finding bargains and saving moneyI love to travel as much as I can when I canLife has a way to test you, it's how you deal with this that matters0

yes, I think that's what Mrcow means.
if you get time x 1.5 on a bank holiday, but everyone gets paid for the day anyway. (I think this is the same as my work) then, at the end of the day, taking everything into account, you'll have 2.5 x your basic salary for that day. £5 an hour = £12.50 an hour.
BUT best to double check. I'd be fuming if I found out I'd worked a day for 1/2 time!0 -

No you're not. You are being paid £7.50/hour plus you have a day's holiday to take at another time (when you will be paid £5/hour).
Look at it another way - stay at home on a bank holiday and get £5/hour but lose a day's holiday.
What you actually want to do depends on how much you value having a particular day off compared with the EXTRA cash.0 -
