Renault Kangoo has no compression - costs??
My partner has a Renault Kangoo that has been making strange noises for 3 months. I had been on and on at him to get it looked at but he dismissed me and didnt bother. The car had problems changing gear (its an auto) and would over rev in lower gears and not change up. It had problems accelerating.
True to what I predicted the car lost power going up a hill on the A2 yesterday, leaving us to be towed to East London by the RAC.
So, the car is now outside my partner's home although he had finally (before the breakdown) booked it in to Renault near my home which is 12 miles from where the car is now.
The RAC man reckons that its lost compression, but is not able to say why, it clearly needs to go to a garage to be repaired.
My boyfriend says that he expects Renault where I live to go to his to pick the car up and take it back to their garage. I said that this would cost a huge amount for the privilege, but he refuses to consider a mechanic nearer to where the car is.
Whats best to do? Stick with where the car is currently booked in for the 24th April which is 12 miles (and through the blackwall tunnel) away from where the car is now,,,or find a mechanic near to where the car is?
How much do garages charge for towing the car to them to fix?
What does 'no compression' mean and how much is it likely to cost to fix? The car only cost 3.5k to buy last year, it has done 12k miles in that time (60k in total) and is nearly 10 years old.
Thanks

sounds like at least the hed gasket has blown, if not something worse seeing it was making noises ( big end bearings )
looking at least £500 for just the head gasket inc Labour, much more at a main dealer(which I would avoid) and probably a rebuilt engine if its the big ends
I would wonder if the repairs/cost are worth it on such an old carEx forum ambassador

No compression means that as one or more of the 4 pistons (in a 4 cylinder engine) moves up in the cylinder, the air and fuel mixture/exhaust gas is escaping to places it shouldn't. Normally the cylinder is sealed and the only place that air/fuel/exhaust gas can leave is via the valves on the top of the cylinder.0 -

Your boyfriend is in for an expensive bill. Especially so if he goes to a main dealer.
Hes being a bit naive about the whole thing, and really should have got it seen to when it started to make strange noises.
Try to convince him to have a local mechanic have a look.0 -
tell me about it, why dont men listen??
anyway, he now thinks that the rac will tow him to renault next week, but ive managed to get him to agree that even tho we will have it diagnosed by renault it might not necessarily be the best place to actually get it fixed,, so we'll see
he is so rigid, he just keeps saying 'well its already booked in' SO UNBOOK IT THEN arrrrggghhhhh0 -
Avoid Renault at all costs, up too £45 per hour.
You dont say what engine is in it, petrol, diesel, turbo, non-turbo etc.
Where are you located.?
Do you have means to transport the car.?
If so, how far are you willing to travel.?
Would you be willing to have the engine replaced (2nd hand), or to have it repaired.?0 -
its a 1.4 automatic petrol, no idea about turbo non turbo, shouldnt think its turbo, or anything fancy anyway.
he hasnt got a clue, if it was me, i would phone a local garage to where the car is and get them to look at it and then probably fix it.
wel our choices are limited, although its his car, because we are in the process of setting up home toegher, we both need to be careful with money and its annoying me that he's being apathetic about costs.
im in south london, the car is currently in east london, we dont have the means to transport it0 -
How about £600, a place in essex (here)
Found them in google, cant recommend anyone. RAC should help getting it to the garage, would need to ring up and ask.
Other option, is that the garage collect it.
Just a idea..0 -
Another one, here
This one will come get the car if its within a distance, says about a warranty of 12months, 12,000miles but does not say about a price.
Play 1 vs 1 on this..0 -

gawd more arguments, today, despite ringing them to explain that the car is not mobile and that the rac will be bringing it, he hasnt even asked how much they charge for diagnostics etc. i phoned a company just now nearer to the car and they charge 80 an hour, but will 'reduce' that to only 70 because the car is old!!!!
so need to know what renault cost for diagnostics. the bloke i spoke to reckons that it will cost around 80ish to diagnose the problem and he wonders if it really is compression or not... ho hum0
