We are going for a week cruising down the canal du midi for my otherhalfs 30th birthday in July.
We shall be going from Castelnaudary and travelling down to Homps then back again.
Does anyone have any suggestions for must stop at places en route? And any ideas for how to make my fellas birthday week the most exciting and romantic holiday of his lifetime :-)

Carcassonne is the biggest attraction along your route, it's a fairy tale medieval walled cite with lots of history. There are lots of wine chateau's and domains in the area to try a spot of wine tasting. The port at Trebes is a nice lively place to stop just before Homps. You'll enjoy the relaxing pace on the Canal, and exploring the sleepy villages as you pass them. Have fun, and if you need any further advice please contact me - I live on the banks of the Canal.

You should go into Toulouse as you pass. It's a charming city, and great for exploring. For something super-memorable, try getting a tour of the Airbus factory - he'd have to be pretty weird not to enjoy seeing the A380 up close!0

Unfortunately we're going in the opposite direction to Toulouse otherwise that sounds nice and manly
Does anyone know if you can fish between Castelnaudary and Homps?0 -
you can get the airport bus from Carcassonne airport to the train station, journey time only 10 minutes approx, then catch a train to Castelnaudary which takes approx 20 mins and costs approx £12pp return. the only part I'm not sure of is getting to your boat from there (I'm at the other side of Carcassonne so not familiar with Castelnaudary)
