Places to see and places to eat in Edinburgh

Hiya
We're off to Edinburgh for a few days and am after some recommendations as where to visit and where to eat.
2 adults and a 5yr old.
Planning on doing the Castle, Brittania and maybe the museum.
Any other places we must see?
Also any places really nice to eat in that don't cost the earth and are child friendly?

Thanks!

  • Don't forget the Zoo, which is worth a visit, especially with a child. Whereabouts are you staying and what sort of restaurants are you looking for? There are loads of places to eat in Edinburgh, from chain restaurants to one-offs, casual to formal. Have a look at http://www.list.co.uk/eating-and-drinking/
for some suggestions - you can choose to list only child friendly places.
  • We're staying on Queensferry Road, the Holiday inn.
Did think about the Zoo but we go quite regularly and so might give it a miss unless it's really good?
Don't want anything formal for food. Will take a look at the list thanks!

    xx

We went 2 the zoo last July whilst visiting my brother in law and girlfriend for the weekend in Edinburgh. We had 2 pre school kiddies 3 & 1 plus I was expecting baby 3 with only a month to go and all I can say is if you don't like walking up hills don't bother as its built into a VERY steep hill, I was knackered and my 3 year old was moaning. The worst part was when we got to the bottom to leave zoo we had to walk back upto the top of a hill to get to carpark. Not a very enjoyable day out for the money it cost :-(

If you travel by bus make sure you have the right money for your ticket or a pre paid ticket from one of the machines next to bus stop. As it happens there was not a machine anywhere near our bus stop. We were in Edinburgh last week and the bus driver was so rude when we did not have the right change or a pre paid ticket . So we had to get off the bus and buy something in a shop to get some change for the fare.

Deep Sea World which is by the north end of the Forth Road Bridge. Has the longest underwater viewing tunnel in the UK.

We have just come back from 5 days with 7,6 and 1 year olds. Castle - boring for little ones, you can have a walk up and a look round the front for free. Dynamic Earth is fab, kids enjoyed that. Places - to eat. There is a wetherspoons on George Street that lets kids in until 7pm. TGI Fridays do a 2 course for a tenner through the week. Lovely food, kids meals around £4.00. Pizza hut do a meal deal for £4.00 between 3 and 6, our kids loved that too!! The national musuem of scotland is great for free, also Holyrood, the scottish parliment is free, as is the peoples story and the childhood musuem on the royal mile.

    Have a great time :)

I don't know how you feel about seafood but we went here a few weeks back and it was fabulous. It had really good reviews on tripadvisor. It's very laid back, kind of canteen style so they will be fine for kids, really good food and great value for money. If there was one near me I'd go there all the time.

It's right behind Princes Street. The sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce is to die for!

Also there's some kind of arts/ edinburgh festival centre just below the castle as you walk up the royal mile where the road splits in two. Cafe style, there were several children in there. Limited but nice menu, we sat around reading the papers for a while as well as having lunch.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

I went to Edinburgh in January and totaly agree about the places above; he Childohod museum and Dynamic Earth are great! Also try the 'Loch Ness Experience' on the Royal Mile - It's like a 3D 25 minute documentary - super fun! I got a discount for that by picking up one of those large tourist maps you find in hotel reception. Wouldn't really recommend the Dungeons, didn't find it particulary interesting. St Giles Cathedral on the Mile is very pretty and also free. I enjoyed the castle and the audio tour, I felt, was worth the extra money and try to be there for the One O Clock Gun which is fun and very loud! Didn't go on the Brittania but wanted too, even went over to Leith but didn't have time to go on - it's in the middle of a shopping centre with a couple of half decent cafes with nice views of the sea and a cinema. Also, the tour buses are fun and the red one has a kids 'horrible history' (its good - I had a sneaky listen!) Hope you have a fab time, it's a beautiful city and I can't wait to go back!
