Cooker hood in chimney breast - please help!

Hi All,
We have a 90cm wide range gas cooker going into a chimney breast.

The height of the breast is only 185 cm to the lintel which leaves us about 30cm (after standard min height of hood required above oven (approx 65cm)) in which to get a hood fitted. (185-65-90) And that's setting it at the min height (which is going to be painful)

The depth of the breast is about 35cm (so obviously the cooker will stick out).

Anyone any experience of doing this?

1 Does it need to be an integrated hood? Telescopic hood? Are the new wall mounted angled hoods any advantage (ie can they be sighted closer to hobs - it seems not)
2 Does it need ot be a full 900 in width (many integrated hoods around 720-800 - will that do if specced appropriately for kitchen size)
3 Any opinions on extracting up the chimney? Seems by most of what I read to be a bad idea...
4 Any recommendations of particular hoods? (irrespective of cost as this point - I'm so frustrated I'd extend the mortage to solve this problem ...) A few I've looked at are:
http://www.rangemaster.co.uk/index_502.htm - 720mm in width
http://www.siemensappliances.co.uk/?5=LI46931GB&25=11953 - full 900mm telescopic

I've spent AGES researching these hoods. It's driving me mad. Someone must be in the same boat!

Thanks in advance.

Nick

Is it an outside wall then?

Couldn't you just have a regular extractor fan mounted up inside the chimney so you can't see it? It would be a lot cheaper.

i take it you are having a range below? i have fitted several into chimney breasts. the last one was two built ins side by side. but make sure you can duct out properly not into the flue, this will cause more issues later.
most will only duct 3m. it may be possible to tap into the breast if it is an outside flue.

Didn't see email notification on this thread so thought I'd had no replies ... thanks for all so far.

I've answered some of my own questions in almost constant research (i hate hoods, now).
    1) Integrated, telescopic are all fine. Some wall mounted hoods can be located closer (e.g AEG do one which can go only 300mm above hob ... however, it's 800mm tall so no good for me.
    2) Integrated hoods at 720 are ok if the manufacturer has designed them powerful enough to go above a 900 hob.
    3) I get so many conflicting answers on this, it seems safest to go out of the side of the chimney and then out of the building from there. (The wall at the back of the fireplace is a party wall)
    4) I'm still stuck here. I thought I had it with the Rangemaster but there is a misprint in their brochure and it's 275mm high not 175mm. Scuppered!

Please if anyone can help me on 4) I'd be eternally grateful. THis is occupying 90% of my waking time (which is getting longer each day due to thinking about it).

Hi Hander, It sounds like your best bet would be to have a fairly compact integrated canopy hood, mounted into the chimney behind the lintle, so that none of it is visible from the front. I can't see that a telescopic extractor will help as they are designed to fit into a standard wall unit.

Have a look at these from Synergy

I think you will find these easily powerful enough and of good quality. Please PM me if you would like some prices.

    Good luck.
