Question about car immobiliser - magnetic
Hi,
I bought a used peugeot 205 diesel a couple of weeks ago - it a great little car and runs just fine - but it has an immobiliser that I suspect was not fitted with the original car. It works by a small round magnet which I have on a key fob which I have to place in contact with a small magnet to the right of the steering column and this then turns the red light which is alongside it green and allows the car to start.
Yesterday I parked in a pub car park and the car wouldn't start even though the immobilizer appeared to go through the normal cycle and the light turned green.
I tried getting in and out of the car several times and it seemed to go through the normal cycle but still the car wouldn't start. After 20 mins I called the AA - I then left it for 15 mins and suddenly when I tried it again it started so I cancelled the AA.
The car radio then stopped working but then came on again when I had driven away from the area.
Can anyone explain this? is there any way that something in that area interfered with the immobiliser?
I don't have any details about the make of the immobiliser.
Any info would be gratefully received as I don't have any money at the present time to take it to a garage.
Thanks, aitch7

Could be the wires to the starter, did it click but not start?0

Hi keith,
No there was no click. All I can say is that the immobiliser behaved like it should - it emitted a long beep and the light turned red when the key was taken out of the ignition then beeped and turned green when I placed the magnet onto the connector - everything was normal expect for the fact that the car was still immobilized.
There was no click or noise when I tried to start the car - just silence as if the car was still immobilized.
After waiting 15 mins everything returned to normal with the immobilizer and the radio.
Best wishes

One option (once you have the money) is maybe to have the immobiliser by-passed? This could be the cheaper option rather than for a garage to try and find an intermittent fault. I had this done to my (older) car as it was cheaper than fixing it and afterall, it is insured against theft.0

Hi,
Thank you so much for replying. The strange thing is that the immobiliser and radio have worked fine ever since I left the place where it was parked - and the car has been started over 30 times since with no problems.
I am no expert but it seems clear to me that something interfered with the immobiliser and radio signals and that it was specific to that area.
Weird....
Best wishes
