Nokia 6500 Classic resets itself

This is driving me barmy.
I change the ring tone to one I like out of the pre-programmed ones in the gallery.
It works! When the phone rings, my new ring tone sounds.
Until, that is, I switch the phone off. When I switch it back on again, the ring tone has reset itself back to the default (that annoying Nokia one that I cannot abide because it keeps reminding me of the tv advert.
Am I doing something wrong or is the phone faulty?
