another quote from age concern forums

"Be very vigilant under Fairhold's ownership. They are very adept at finding new and creative ways of squeezing money out of the Freeholds they own. The fact that these are retirement flats occupied by elderly pensioners is no protection"

    and it gets worse

" Peverel and Fairhold are part of the same group of companies"

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread. I am very confused about things, but have been working hard, so haven't been able to give it much thought. Am retiring end-August, and all I know is that I will be moving ('downsizing') as soon as it feels right to do so.

I must say that I do like the idea of Weston still, and so long as it hasn't been taken over by ASBO-thugs, it's still on the list. I do know about the wet Wednesday in Weston, but still want it on the list. Will consider North Devon too, probably, and the other ideas mentioned on this thread. I have a friend in Stoke who is strongly considering HA in Stoke - so, Weston vs Stoke??? I agree about looking at the retirement social events eg U3A, and where I am now has, ironically, an excellent U3A. Pointless, however, staying here, though, as actually no friends in this area (worked in a different area).

Oh well, plenty to think about. Please will you all keep posting if any other thoughts (or anecdotes) come to mind?

Once again, thanks to all, I am so grateful to you for taking the time and trouble to post.

    Yours
    Jen

Maybe consider Clevedon if you want an alternative to WSM, no Asbo thugs and just feels nicer than Weston. (imho of course) Should be plenty of the type of housing that you are looking for.

Hi, whereabouts in Cheshire are you? There is a lovely warm pool in Congleton, at FX leisure by Tescos. I'm halfway between Congleton and Stoke, in the beautiful staffordshire moorlands. I came here from Mcr when I took early retirement and haven't regretted it for a minute. PM me if you'd like more info x
I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.

Yess! Excellent idea. Will Google to have a look now and start exploring when I retire. Thanks.

PS - have joined the Age Concern Forum to get an overview on what others are doing. So thanks to Kittie for posting that link. Learning lots (as I did with this wonderful forum!)

Now hang on a minute you are NOT old enough to get involved with Age Concern. If I recall you are the same age as me - nowhere near old enough in my opinion.;)

Ha! Just thinking ahead. Actually, it was very useful. A friend and I are both thinking we should get into retirement accommodation (not sheltered or close care) but just where someone would keep an eye on us and ensure we got the next level of care if required - say it got to dementia or something). We don't want to get to a vulnerable state without help.

Also we both want to downsize our houses for various reasons. She knows where she wants to live, and I don't. It could be anywhere - but I don't have a lot of money.

Thanks for your lovely replies. This is such a lovely board (compared with where I usually hang out - they're squabbling there over the word 'bubble' at the moment and calling each other names!

    Oh dear!

We do, but on the whole we are mature enough to step away from the keyboard when reminded to be nice. ;)

Personally, I think the main thing is to make the move to somewhere which is disability friendly and easy to manage, and then make friends so that you're missed if anything goes wrong. You don't have to be in a 'retirement' complex to have an alarm system installed: we're trying to persuade my parents to have one in a perfectly normal family home.

I mentioned my parents in a previous post: what I didn't say then is that should either of them completely lose the use of their legs they'll be stuffed, because both front and back doors are on the narrow side, and need a right-angled turn the minute you're through the door.

Whereas I looked at this house and thought "hey, these are nice wide doors, you'd get a wheelchair in here easy peasy, and that staircase is so wide a stairlift would be NO problem". Because I'd already told the estate agent that whatever we bought, they'd take me out of it in a box! :rotfl:

Oh, and the other 'gem' from my parents: when they moved, my sibling said to them "If you live that side of town, I am NOT going to be able to pop in every day, take you shopping, or give you lifts everywhere, because it will take me nearly an hour to get from my house to your house and back." It was necessary to remind them of what had been said recently, and Dad said "But we didn't know we were going to get ill then!" I know some people stay completely fit and healthy until they drop, but the rest of us generally start creaking a bit before that ...
