My last move - where to move to, please?

Hi Errata. I think, thanks to this thread, I've gone off the idea of the warden! I agree with you (and Lilac_Lady) who indicated that the fees could be affordable now, but could well change in the future. And the lack of control - for someone who likes their cashback when switching utilities, etc!
There's a lot to look at - I'm glad I started so early!
Yes, prices are high, molly_mandy. Sidmouth may well be considerably out of my league - even for extreme downsizing!
Thanks
Jen

If planning to travel and not a driver, reasonably close proximity to a mainline train line station ,along with a decent local bus service ,makes a big difference.I've noticed that more upmarket towns appear to have much poorer bus services than those where the population is less well off - and are often located quite some distance from the main line.So a less smart (cheaper) town may in fact have better services if you are a non-driver. This is worth checking in detail IMHO.Prices may also be lower in the less well off town for the same goods.Trying to keep it simple...0

Even if you are a driver, IMO it makes sense to make your final move to somewhere with reasonable transport links. No point having a bus pass if you can't get to the buses, and let's face it, many of us won't be safe driving once we're well into our dotages. Eyes, legs, they all stop working...Signature removed for peace of mind0

Yes, EdInvestor and Savvy Sue - so right. A friend lives in Stoke and there is everything easily to hand - hospitals (!); late busses for theatre; etc.
I haven't given up the idea of Bristol, Savvy_Sue - just got interested in being close to the sea! Which area are you in (PM me if preferred)? Of course, I know Bristol very, very well, and it is a bit hilly (for walking and driving - I'm not very good with driving up Constitution Hill).
I'm also 'Rightmoving' a general area in the South West rather than a specific town, and checking out properties which are not in my hoped-for area, but just seem attractive and suitable
Lord knows where I'll end up!
Thanks

JJ - re: Lyme Regis: it's ridiculously steep, built on a hill. We were there on holiday 3 years ago and I needed my hiking pole just to go up the main shopping street! Lovely but crikey!
If you don't mind tourist-busy summers we thought Weymouth much more fun - and flatter, hosting the sailing olympics in 2012 too.
Are you ok? I was concerned about you falling over recently. Been checked for osteoporosis at all?:hello:0 -
Hi azureblue - I'm fine thanks.
I was going to have the osteoporosis test (unrelated to the falls), but did a heel test and it was perfect, so won't trouble now with the main test just yet (no osteoporosis in the family). I just fell down the stairs and was fine (slipped on the carpet), then two weeks later fell on the cobbles/ancient pavement in one of my local towns. It was just on the same place (wrist) so then it hurt!
Thanks for the comment about Lyme Regis, and will look at Weymouth....
Have really enjoyed this thread - hope it's been of interest to others, and will keep popping in to see if there are more ideas. So grateful to everyone.
Regards
Jen

Yes, I went to Weymouth with my aunt last summer and it is flat and still very pleasant views. Although auntie tells me it is much cheaper there than the neighbouring areas0

Yup, it's a bit hilly. I work in St Pauls, and sometimes get the train to work, it's great rolling down the hill on the way in, but I am always rather puffed going back up in the evening! :rotfl:Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Thanks for the GloBrix website, Errata, hadn't heard of them. Will use in conjunction with Rightmove.
Savvy_Sue - no thanks button on your post (!), but thank you for your post.
Thanks
