Laptop Over Heating

I am worried yesterday my laptop got so hot it cut out must be a safety thing.This is the first time it has happened to me.
I am wondering if the problem has any thing to do with my fan not working properly.
Is there any way I could test to find out if my fans are working inside my computer.
And how to if any way I could speed up the fans.

blast the fan from underneath and in the air vents on the side/back of the laptop

To add to Browntoa's suggestions - investigate laptop coolers, a metal plate with a couple of fans in, powered from a USB socket. Good also for angling the laptop to be able to type more easily on the keyboard; bad because they usually cost stupid amounts of money...

You can hear the fans running (when they cut in you hear a noise like an engine revving up), also put your fingers over the vents and feel for the airflow. If they're not working you need to get it fixed ASAP, as overheating your laptop will kill it before too long.
