    Maybe they will extend the refund period over the Xmas period, many other shops do this. If some one buys you a gift they should ask for a gift receipt which doesn't tell you how much the purchaser paid but it does tell the sales assistant the price paid and the date. Without a gift receipt you would be offered the last selling price and it would be in the form of a credit voucher with a time limit.

    They are obviously doing this to fall in line with many other retailers. Just make sure when you buy from M&S you make the time to return items within the 35 days or try it on first to make its definitely what you want. You can always buy a gift card to give to someone rather than actual clothes, they have a 2 year expiry on them don't they?

    Before I head into the store, does anyone know if I can insist on a full refund - I have some items to return that I bought in February and on the receipt it states that refund is available until 10th May.

    Thoughts please?

    I would have thought you were OK for a refund if you have the receipt that says refund available until 10 May, presume the change only applies to goods bought from now on.

    Yes the change would only apply from goods bought from 12th April onwards. Anything bought before then would still have the 90 day policy as its printed on the receipt. You will have no problems as long as you have the receipt to prove when you bought it.

    That's not M&S's fault. They are providing a service that legally they do not have to so 35 days is very good.
  • Sorry, I must disagree. I don't think that a month is necessarily ample time.
    Most M&S stores are either in major cities or in out of town shopping malls.

    I have a family, work and run a home. I do not work, live or pass by any Shopping Mall, or the city.
    Apart from popping in to the small food M&S stores, a trip to M&S, and most other 'non-food' retailers is a "once every few months" excursion. Usually only when I want something specific - eg kids shoes, new winter coat etc.
    So if on my very infrequent trips I buy a few items of clothing, it may be a couple of months before I have the time to make a special trip back to return items that didn't fit, or kids just didn't like.

    Only this Saturday I returned some items to Rackhams - having to make a special trip into the city for the sole purpose of returning them, as I knew if I didn't return them on Saturday, I wouldn't get a refund.
    So on a hectic Saturday I had to pay to get into town, fight my way through crowds, and spent a couple of valuable hours of my precious weekend returning goods.

    As a result of this experience, I had already made the decision that in future, unless I was absolutely 100% sure I would not be returning the item, I will not be buying anything from Rackhams.

    This news means the same rule will have to apply to any future shopping in M&S - although it will probably mean more M&S BNWT items will be on offer on ebay ;)

    For what it is worth, the last time I asked, Boots have no time limit what-so-ever on returning items - and they sell swim/beach wear etc. So this summer may see me buying more than just sun cream from them.

    So what you are basicly saying is that the stores should work their refund policies around you?????

    i for one find the M&S refund policy to be great and simple and you get no hassle from the staff!!!

    Just realised I completely echoed what bubblegumcola had already said! So I think you'll have no problems if you ask relatives to get gift receipts - the sales assistants usually go out of their way to tell customers about this at Xmas so it's hard to forget.

    I have to agree with the majority of people, 90 days was nice but not absolutely necessary and most people who have bought the wrong size/ changed their mind will have ample time to return items. Don't forget though that this applies to items you have changed your mind about, Not items that are faulty or not fit for purpose. Don't let the assistants fob you off with the 35days if something is faulty etc or that you have to accept a credit.
    Look after the pennies and the £££s will look after themselves

    In fact it says on the receipt that this policy does not affect your rights if the item is faulty or something to that effect.

    I used to buy things if I swa them in the sale, for the chidren to grow into. Thank goodness they aren't of "Marks and Spencer clothes bought by Mum" ages any more - 35 days would definitely not have been long enough to see if they liked them when they grew into them, as indeed neither was 90 days.

    It's still a week longer than anyone else.

    Am I the only person who goes around with a diary marked with "last day for returning" various things I've bought? Perhaps Martin ought to offer us a Returns Alert, a bit like the Tart Alert.
