The new house we moved into has a economy 7 water heater timer (Quartz7) fitted next to the boiler. we set the time to GMT 3 days back. It hasnt moved an inch since then . Have I done something wrong or is there anything I need to do. I know it is in good working order . Any advise will be helpful.

If this is a rotary timer, it should move and they generally make a bit of noise as they move round. If it isn't moving at all, it is either broken or electricity isn't getting to it. You should check your fuse box for any flipped switches or blown fuses and any fuse box or fused switch near the timer. Come to think of it, look around the heater for a switch - it should be on. If you are getting hot water, you will know if it is on or off. Replacing the switch is straightforward if you would be confident replacing, say, a mains socket. You can buy a new timer for about 15 pounds, more if you want digital or battery backup power. Robert Dyas sell them or DIY stores. It must be able to handle the power of the heater (which should be written on it - 2Kw h or whatever). Remember to shut off the electricity first, and if you are in any doubt get a friend over who knows what they are doing or an electrician. By the way, check what time your economy 7 actually comes on and off by looking at the meter every 15 minutes 10.30 to midnight and 7 onwards in the morning. I was presently surprised to find I get 9 hours of cheap heating rather than 7, so now I put the tumble dryer on before I go to bed!

It may not be necessary to keep watching the meter. We have found, in our present house and in previous ones with Economy 7, that when the timer switches to low at night there is a loud click from the meter and a sudden change in the brightness of lights. Same happens in the morning when the low rate changes back to high. You may notice this in your home.

You should be able to get your supplier to come out and check/change your timeswitch for free.
(although it does mean waiting in all day for a engineer)
I'm not actually sure you are allowed to do it yourself.

Be careful with Economy 7, after I recieved a elec bill for £134 a month I realised it can not be very economic...make sure that the timer is set correctly (I can give no advice on this as still haven't work it or our storage heaters out, but am moving into my own house in 2 weeks with gas central heating so decided not to bother now! )

The OP isn't referring to the mechanical switch which changes from standard to E7 but to a standalone timer like this.

    I think ......
