Bulk buying sugar for baking

I am now buying my bread flour in large sacks from a mill s I go through so much of it! but I was wondering if anyone knows if there is anywhere online that sell larger packs of different sugars like caster/light brown/muscovado/icing sugars etc for baking purposes, bigger than those in the supermarkets?

i dont know of any online sorry ,but makro and costco do sell larger catering bags
  • where abouts are you?
  • It depends where you are. If you are within 40 miles of Sheffield, there's a wholefood wholesaler, also open to the public called Lembas. Their website is:
www.lembas.co.uk I used to use them when we ran the bakery and would buy 25Kg sacks of caster, muscavado etc.
You can call in, but they also deliver.

For further south (London to be specific), there is community foods:
www.communityfoods.co.uk They do cash and carry and delivery and are based in Brent Cross.

Failing that, could you go to your local wholefood shop and ask if they can get in sacks of sugar for you?

And, like tattooed bum said, the larger wholesalers like Costco, Makro and Booker should also stock them.

I've been wondering this too. I already buy granulated in 5 kilo bags from the supermarkets, but with the amount of baking I do, it would be handy to buy other stuff in bulk.
The trouble with places like Makro and Costco, is that you need a business to buy from them.

For some odd reason Savers the chemist gets in really cheap sugar now & again, I always buy as much as I can carry!

Not quite on topic, but ordinary Whitworths granulated sugar is actually cheaper in Poundland, I've recently discovered.
1.5kg bags for £1 is better than any 5kg supermarket deal I've found.

I'm still trying, and failing, to find the 'broken brown beer bottle' type sugar lumps which I found easily till the last year or two.
Asked here and had no joy - also Waitrose etc. - ditto.
So, sneakily renewing query of my own...........

My nearest poundland's about 30 miles away, but next time I'm there, I'll see what sugar they've got.

Gigervamp, if you know of anyone who runs a Brownie or Guide unit, you can get in to Makro and Bookers with a warrent card. You get a day pass.

You can join costco if you are not a business - I think there are restrictions on what times you can go in. There isn't one anywhere near me and I would love to go in for a rummage.
  • If you're near London, chinese places such as Hoo Hing, Wing Yip etc will have them. You don't have to be a business to shop there.
