Sainsbury or Tesco sell basic kettles for less than a tenner.
Lower power kettles will take longer to come to boil, so no gain.0 -
I bought a kettle from tesco a month ago for £8-31. It's excellent. Lights up while boiling. Make sure you get a rapidboil. No complaints.0

Same here. They are marked up as nearly £10 but when it goes through the till it's £8.31 or £8.41, cant remember which. For a 3kw kettle it's a bargain.0 -

Many kettles today are 2.2kW
Those that are 3kW are usually marketed as 'rapid boil' or something similar.
Unless you regularly boil the full 1.7l, then a 2.2kW kettle should be fast enough. (even the full 1.7l is not particularly slow)"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Ok Thanks everyone for your input, as we needed one quickish we walked down to Argos and purchased the one in my link, The Mrs. says it's fine and nice and quite.0

A lower wattage for a kettle will only ever mean it will take longer to boil. It won't save energy. You can't change the amount of energy needed to heat water - it's fixed by physics.0

Hi,
totally agree with you, was just about to make that point.
Higher wattage boils quicker, lower wattage takes longer, both use the same amount of energy.
If you like a lie in and a quick cuppa in the morning before rushing to catch the bus to work, then get the fast boil, or just get a teasmaid.0 -
Digressing ever so slightly. Will scientists ever come up with an alternative that doesn't cost so much in electricity as a kettle?
Quite a few years back I was in the army and we ran a number of very large radio's, lighting, heating etc from a single generator. Everyone around could tell when someone switched the kettle on because the generator had a "hiccup" before picking up again. Proof positive that a kettle takes the most power. A good way of knowing the tea was about to be made but not good for the war effort!0 -
Just a thought- as the advert states 1850-2200 watts , could this be to take into account that as the mains voltage can vary then the wattage would vary as well ??0
