So many ways to go about it. I'd recommend this website that explains the ins and outs very well. Doom9.net - The definitive DVD backup resource

  • Doom9 is a great site but can be quite overwhelming if your not too sure where to start.

From experience I've used these two programs with no problems:
DVD Shrink (Quite old now but still does the job on most dvds)
DVDFab 5 (Just started using this a few months ago, works like a dream and its totally free so you can't complain!)

If you mean films, not home video, they are encrypted. The best freeware is DVD Decrypter, but for legal reasons the chap has not kept it up to date. So use that but also download DVDFab HD Decrypter free version, which can do the very latest Movies/Encryption in case you have any that DVD Decrypter cannot do.
Go to www.videohelp.com, select "tools" from the left side of the website then select "Decrypters (DVD Rippers)." They will be listed with the links for downloads.
You will have to get instructions from there or the web. DVDFab has a help guide that comes with it.
Both of these will do a very good job and are worth using and are free.
Movies will soon fill a harddrive (4-7GB each!)

You might also consider converting them to h.264 mp4 files using something like HandBrake in order to save HDD space.
